A closed galley kitchen, a pantry, and a dining room nobody used. The wall between them carried the second floor, which is why three earlier contractors told the owners to live with it.
What we built
- Removed the bearing wall and set an engineered steel beam, flush with the ceiling
- New electrical service, recessed lighting, and a dedicated range circuit
- White oak cabinetry to the ceiling, a 10-foot island, honed concrete counters
- A 9-foot picture window where the pantry door used to be
How it went
The beam went in over one long weekend with temporary shoring. The owners cooked on a hot plate in the garage for eleven weeks and said it was worth it.
