Site-wide overlay Planned

A quiet way back up a long page.

A long services page, a menu, a portfolio. When the visitor is at the bottom, the top is a long way away. This overlay adds a button that appears once they have scrolled, and returns them to the top with focus where it should be.

A small button that appears after the visitor scrolls and takes them back to the top, with a smooth scroll that stops for reduced motion.

Site-wide overlay
Applied as your pages are served, on every page, with no republish.

One switch. It appears after a screen of scrolling, sits in the corner you choose, and never covers another overlay or the skip link.

Small, and correct.

  1. Appears when useful

    Hidden at the top of the page, shown after a screen or so of scrolling, hidden again when the visitor returns.

  2. A real button

    Named "Back to top", focusable, activated by keyboard, and it moves focus to the top of the page as well as scrolling there.

  3. Smooth, unless asked not to be

    A smooth scroll for most visitors and an instant jump for anyone who prefers reduced motion.

  4. Styled and placed

    Your branding decides the look; it sits in the corner you choose and steps aside for the chat button.

How it will work.

  1. Switch it on On the Plugins page, enable Back to Top and choose a corner.
  2. Check a long page Scroll on your dev site and watch it appear.
  3. Done It is on your dev site and your live domain immediately.

Good to know

  • An overlay applied as pages are served, it never edits your pages and switches off cleanly.
  • It stacks with the chat and call buttons rather than overlapping them.
  • It stays out of the way on short pages, where there is nowhere to go back to.

Do I need this?

Only if your pages are long. On a short page it never appears, so switching it on costs nothing.

Does it work with the keyboard?

Yes. It is a real button and it moves focus to the top of the page, not just the scroll position.

Will it cover the chat button?

No. Overlays are arranged so they sit beside each other, never on top.
