A 1920s cottage in the historic district needed its roof to match the street. Hand-split cedar, laid the old way.

The historic district asked for cedar, and the owners wanted a roof that looked the way it did in 1924. The old shakes had been covered with two layers of asphalt.
What we built
- Removed three layers of roofing down to the original skip sheathing
- New solid deck with a breathable underlayment for the cedar
- Hand-split red cedar shakes with a straight-line exposure
How it went
Cedar is slow work. The crew spent four days on eighteen squares and hand-cut every hip. The review board signed off on the first visit.
